UNIVERSITY OF THE VISAYAS – TOLEDO CAMPUS

CAMPUS HISTORY

In early post liberation days of 1946, Judge Blas F. Cavada, acting Municipal Judge of Toledo, found the opportunity to propose his plans to Don Vicente A. Gullas, founder of Visayan Institute, of having a secondary and college institution in Toledo for the solicitous purpose of helping young men and women who could not afford to go to Cebu to acquire an education, The fear and difficulty of students in going to Cebu City for they will pass through the cliffy mountains and narrow Manipis Road and the very limited public transportation plying to Cebu were the most logical reasons why UV should open a branch in Toledo.

Because of Don Vicente Gullas’ philosophy to help the youth of the land, he readily accepted the proposal of Judge Blas F. Cavada to open a private school in Toledo. The school TOLEDO VISAYAN INTITUTE was formally opened in 1947 with an initial enrolment of 354 students with 8 teachers.

When the school was opened in 1947, it merely rented a school building. The students in both secondary and collegiate classes were housed in the Kapungan building which was located in Katipunan St., Poblacion, Toledo City. The Kapungan building had six classrooms, an office of the Principal and a Conference Room at the second floor while the library and the laboratory were located on the ground floor. Behind the Kapungan building was a temporary building made of light materials and nipa-shingle roofing where the first year students were housed in two classrooms. The elementary pupils had their classes at the Lourdes Academy building located at Poloyapoy St., Poblacion, Toledo City near the Toledo Parish Church.

By SY 1956-1957, the Toledo Visayan Institute was now named TOLEDO JUNIOR COLLEGE, constructed a two-storey building to meet the need of the increasing enrolment. It stood on a rented lot at Katipunan St. owned by Mr. Ficisimo Cabusas which was opposite the Kapungan Building. The new building had twelve classrooms, six on the ground floor and the other six on the second floor. One room on the second floor served as the Laboratory room and another two rooms were utilized as office of the Principal and Library. The Kapungan building was eventually vacated.

With the purchase of the lot from Jose Mercado by Don Vicente Gullas in the SY 1964-1965, the school administration had the full control of any expansion they had in mind. The following school year, the school was renamed TOLEDO GULLAS COLLEGE a new building was constructed. In it were eleven classrooms and rooms intended for offices and a much bigger library. A four-room annex building was constructed by school year 197901980. With ever increasing enrolment, a semi-permanent building was constructed right behind the Toledo Rural Bank which is owned by Dr. Jose “Dodong” R. Gullas, the youngest son of Don Vicente and Lady Josefina Gullas, the youngest son Don Vicente and Lady Josefina Gullas. This building gad six classrooms with more rooms, more students were accommodated.

School year 1987-1988 gave way to the construction of a three-storey building, the Don Vicente Gullas Building. Each floor had five classrooms. Smaller spaces along the corridors’ end were utilized as Typing Room, Guidance office, Dental Clinic and DNST Office. With the demolition of the old structure which houses the office of the Administrator, Registrar, Accounting, two laboratory rooms and a multimedia Instructional Center, the other is a two-room structure which serves as lecture rooms for Computer Classes.

The school has purchased a new set of modern dental equipment to facilitate smooth service to the students. The Typing Room has a good number of computer units. The Guidance office and the school clinic are housed in one office. The DNST office is maintained by the ROTC officers. It has a small space for the office and for the accommodation of the higher officers who come every weekend for training and supervision.

Through all the years since its incipience, the University of the Visayas, Toledo City Campus, because of its ardent desire to steadfastly cater to the educational needs of the people here around in this bustling metropolis along the western sea board of Cebu, has of late embarked on another gargantuan task aimed towards fulfilling its mission.

Not quite very long ago, sometime in the year 2008, under the able stewardship of its administrator, Dr. Pablo M. Antopina and the optimism of the principal Mrs. Trinidad G. Villaceran,  the new four-storey Doña Josefina R. Gullas Building, (named as a token of homage and honor to the late Lady Josefina R. Gullas, the beloved better half of the founder of the University of the Visayas, Don Vicente A. Gullas), came into being to lend a more breathing space and accommodation to the ever-increasing school population.

By leaps and bounds, within a span of two years, the school’s population has tremendously increased and, cognizant of the massive influx of student population, the school has found no other recourse to cushion the impact of an ever-growing school population but rather to build additional rooms.

With such a pressing urgency to contain an overflowing population, an additional 12-room Doña Josefina Annex Building was built in the mid-year of 2010 and was made available for occupancy by yearend.

And to add another feather to its cap, the school, with a history of high passing percentages in the LET Board Examinations, has, more than ever, chalked up another laurel of fame and glory when one its graduates, batch 2009-2010, copped the 7th place during the September 26, 2010 Board Examination Results.

UV- Toledo then became a household name not only in Toledo but to the neighboring municipalities as well. The number of enrollees unexpectedly rises so high that pave the way for the realization of the 3-storey Teresita Building with 24 classrooms last 2012.

The University finally answered the request of many Toledanos to have strong educational foundation by opening Elementary level and the glee was intense after the Inday Pining Building with 30 classrooms became an abode of learning for Elementary and High School students under the administration of Dr. Camila Caparida, the Executive Dean and Mr. Saturnino Gutang as the Principal year 2014.

Learning became more advance under the administration of Mr. Alfie M. Ardillo, the Campus Administrator and the principal, Mr. Junlee R. Oga. Students were provided with state of the art facilities like the new libraries, computer laboratories, science laboratories and the speech laboratory. These became avenues for students to experience world class learning extravagancy that can equip them with skills that can make them confident and competitive in their field wherever their fate brings them.

Truly, University of the Visayas Toledo City Campus became a home of champions that produced many professionals and heroes in the eyes of their loved ones. The promise of the University to love and serve Humanity will always stay the same for years to come.

With God’s inspiration as my guiding light, someday among thousands of VI and UV students and alumni, i hope to produce kings and queens who will never wear crowns but shall be royal just the same. And when I shall be dead, I wish that my life will not be a tale that is told-a dream empty and forgotten. I wish to be a prayer, or a song of love and usefulness, even if only to kindle the heart or fire the soul of some weakling or some unfortunate struggling beings who have still the spark and image of God in them.

AND THAT SOMEDAY IS TODAY, AND WE ARE PROUD TO CLAIM-WE ARE AMONG THE KINGS AND QUEENS WHO DO NOT HAVE CROWNS BUT ARE “ROYALS” WITHIN JUST THE SAME.
